How to store filament to prolong its lifespan and maintain its quality

3 min reading time

The key to beautiful 3D prints is maintaining the quality of your filament and preventing degradation. This article delves into how moisture damages plastic molecules and shares 5 storage techniques, from using vacuum packaging to controlling temperature and sunlight, to maximize the lifespan of your materials.

Proper storage of filament for printing is crucial. Incorrect storage can lead to problems, especially changes in quality, making it unusable. Therefore, understanding how to care for this type of material to ensure its longevity requires attention to every detail, confirming that its quality remains. Let's explore this in detail and adapt these practices.

Why is Filament Storage Important?

It's important to understand that printing materials like Filament have a molecular chain structure. If not stored correctly and exposed to moisture for too long, the molecular chains can break down, leading to a loss of tensile strength and clarity. When used, this often results in air bubbles on the surface of the print, and the final product doesn't look as desired. Therefore, learning proper storage methods is essential to ensure long-lasting use and unchanging quality.

Tips for Storing Filament for Long-lasting Use and Unchanging Quality

1. Store materials in vacuum bags or airtight containers

The first step I recommend is storing filament in vacuum bags. These bags have a zip-lock to prevent air from entering and also remove air from inside the bag. Alternatively, you can use airtight containers, which are boxes with seals to prevent air from entering and exiting, similar to vacuum bags. Then, add desiccant packets, which will be very helpful. So, once you're done using it, don't forget to put in the desiccant packets.

2. Store in original packaging with desiccant sachets

Another way to store filament for long-lasting use and unchanged quality is to keep it in its original packaging. This is because the original packaging usually comes with desiccant sachets to absorb moisture. Therefore, the original packaging is just as important as other storage methods.

3. Specialized dehumidifying boxes / humidity control cabinets

Another method is to use specialized dehumidifying boxes or humidity control cabinets to protect the filament from surrounding moisture. Don't worry about the cost, as the increasing use of printer filaments has made dehumidifying boxes/cabinets more affordable than before.

4. Store in a dry place

As emphasized, filament is prone to damage when exposed to moisture, so it's best to store it in a dry place. Do not let the material be exposed to air directly. Store it in an enclosed area, or for long-term storage, include a desiccant to protect and help the filament remain usable for a long time.

5. Avoid areas exposed to light or high temperatures

In addition to moisture, sunlight and high temperatures can also damage the material. Therefore, if you want to use filament for a long time with consistent quality, do not store it in areas exposed to light, as sunlight can degrade the polymer bonds, especially for materials with natural components. This increases the chance of deterioration and damage. Also, avoid high temperatures, such as near heaters, electrical appliances, or walls. However, it's not necessary to store it in the refrigerator, as it can be damaged by moisture there.

Knowing all this, I hope everyone now has a better understanding of how to store filament. The key is to be mindful of moisture and temperature to ensure long-lasting use and desired quality, avoiding the need to buy new material and significantly reducing costs for businesses that use it regularly.
