The Colosseum was a massive outdoor stadium in the heart of Rome. Construction began during the reign of Roman Emperor Vespasian and was completed during the reign of Emperor Titus in the 1st century. The amphitheater was a circular structure of brick and sandstone, measuring 527 meters in circumference and 57 meters in height. It could hold approximately 50,000 spectators. The cleverly designed oval-shaped stadium was designed to bring spectators closer to the athletes, and drainage systems were designed to prevent flooding during rain. It served as a model for modern stadiums, and took approximately 10 years to complete.
